: Leanne and Simon couples portraits.
Like I have mentioned before, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are one of the most versatile locations for portrait photography.
Pip and I met up with Leanne and Simon in the gardens for their engagement photography session. Leanne Simon are such a lovely and affectionate couple, Simon even has a tattoo of Leanne’s name on his forearm. How cute is that?
The couple came well prepared for the shoot, even bringing along a change of outfits. Changing outfit part way into the photo session gives a different look to the images.
By the time the shoot started, the sun was a bit low as it was late in the day, and coupled with the autumn colours produced lovely warm light which adds a romantic feel to the images.
We shot in 5 different locations, all of which were less than 100m from each other proving the versatility of this fantastic location.
Most of the lighting was backlighting the couple using the sun and using an off camera flash to light them from the front. This type of lighting is becoming the go to when shooting portraits.
The start of the shoot was a little shaky, but once the Leanne and Simon got relaxed, we were cooking with gas, and their natural selves came out to play.
The resulting images prove it all.
If you are after photos with warm, glowing, romantic light. Shoot your subjects early in the morning while the sun is still low or late in the afternoon towards sunset.

When autumn arrives in Christchurch the weather pretty much feels like winter weather, and so was the case the day we shot Kelly and Phil’s engagement photos.
In the late autumn afternoon sun, we met up with Kelly and Phil under the Waimakariri Rail River bridge. The couple had opted for this particular location because of the location’s privacy and of their outdoorsy nature.
Phil loves the spot as he is a 4-wheel drive fanatic and frequents the area. He even works on his on 4×4 vehicles for repairs and improvements.
To kick start the shoot, we utilised a dirt road nearby and some beautiful warm light that was coming through the autumn coloured tree leaves. We shot on the dirt road for a short period making use of the different backgrounds that were at our disposal.
The shoot then moved to the river bed where we finished off and put Phil out of the misery of being in front of the camera.
It was a fun and enjoyable shoot and was short and sweet.
Help your subjects to feel relaxed in front of the camera. The more they relax, the better the images the that will result from the shoot.

Photographing people outside on a cloudy day is considered the time for people photography. I love it too, but at the same time, I miss the glow the sun can bring into images.
On the day of Lucy and Jeremy’s engagement shoot, the weather was cold and cloudy with a slight breeze. For those of you who have been to Bottlelake forest lately, you will know that the trees that have been sheltering the area from the nasty easterlies are slowly disappearing. Soon finding wind refuge in the trees is going to be a thing of the past.
Each time Pip and I have recently visited the forest we have disappointed to find some of our favourite spots cleared off trees. Enough of my sad tree disappearing story and back to the engagement shoot.
Because of the cold weather, we didn’t want to keep Lucy and Jeremy out in the open longer than necessary. So to be able to plan a quick shoot, we arrived early to give ourselves time to walk around and scout the area for spots we could potentially use for the engagement shoot. Just a bit of forward-planning on our part “pat on the back” hehehe.
When the couple arrived, we got straight to the business end of things. Lucy and Jeremy are a chilled couple who feel comfortable with each other, and we’re relaxed and laughing from the first click. Need I say more, the shoot was a fun one with heaps of crazy(that’s a good crazy) moments.
In less than an hour, we had worked with five different backdrops and each shot with different lighting. We shot most images with natural light and others with a combination of natural light and off camera flash.
Am loving the off camera flash photography, it’s been opening up a whole new bag of possibilities and creativity. We can’t wait for the wedding season to kick off so can apply this lighting to weddings. YAY!!!
I will stop the rambling. Enjoy the photos from the shoot.
Check the location you intend to use for your photo shoot at least a few days before the shoot. Especially in the modern Christchurch, locations are ever changing. Walls, trees or buildings you may have envisioned using for a shoot may be gone by the time you get to the shoot date.
Have an option B in place as insurance.

]]>Cathedral square engagement photos: Daniel and Katie couples shoot
On a sunny and partly cloudy Saturday morning, we met up with Daniel and Katie in the Cathedral Square to shoot their engagement photos.
They chose the Cathedral Square because that’s where were they first met and went on their first date.
The weather was not cold but cool enough to warrant putting a jacket on.
Daniel and Katie are a smiley, funny and playful couple who consider themselves to be big kids at heart, aren’t we all.
Dan is into Star Wars and gaming, while Katie is also into Burlesque and is a big fan of Disney. I must say Pip and I are Disney fans too.
The engagement shoot was Dan and Katie’s first shoot together so will be something for them to cherish.
Shooting Dan and Katie was fun and such a breeze as the couple are so comfortable with each other. I didn’t even have to make my dad jokes to get them to laugh and relax, they had that part covered.
We started the shoot by the bench where they first met and made our way around different spots in the Square.
If you are planning to have a photo shoot in the Cathedral Square or any other public place that gets busy as the day goes on, best you schedule the shoot in the morning before it gets busy.
