Spring Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot-Port Hills-Christchurch; I think all of us were as nervous as each other, to begin with, in that this was different for us.
Glaiza and Neil had booked with us through a wedding planner – so we hadn’t met each other yet.

But it didn’t take long before the ice melted, we all clicked pretty quickly, and they were the sweetest couple to work with.

The early evening light up on the Port Hills was just perfect.

We feel incredibly privileged to work in this fantastic wedding industry.

: Leanne and Simon couples portraits.

Like I have mentioned before, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are one of the most versatile locations for portrait photography.

Pip and I met up with Leanne and Simon in the gardens for their engagement photography session. Leanne Simon are such a lovely and affectionate couple, Simon even has a tattoo of Leanne’s name on his forearm. How cute is that?

The couple came well prepared for the shoot, even bringing along a change of outfits. Changing outfit part way into the photo session gives a different look to the images.

By the time the shoot started, the sun was a bit low as it was late in the day, and coupled with the autumn colours produced lovely warm light which adds a romantic feel to the images.

We shot in 5 different locations, all of which were less than 100m from each other proving the versatility of this fantastic location.

Most of the lighting was backlighting the couple using the sun and using an off camera flash to light them from the front. This type of lighting is becoming the go to when shooting portraits.

The start of the shoot was a little shaky, but once the Leanne and Simon got relaxed, we were cooking with gas, and their natural selves came out to play.
The resulting images prove it all.

Photography Tip

If you are after photos with warm, glowing, romantic light. Shoot your subjects early in the morning while the sun is still low or late in the afternoon towards sunset.

New Brighton Beach Engagement Photography

New Brighton Beach Engagement Photography: Lyndal and Paul couples shoot, plus Sasha, the obedient dog.

There is no better place to photograph a couple and their dog than the beach.
Lyndal and Paul wanted to have their engagement photos shot at the beach so they could bring along their beloved dog Sasha and have her in the photos too.
They opted for the area around New Brighton Memorial because it’s not as busy as the other places along the beach.
As the norm, we arrived early to scout out the location for spots to use for the shoot. These spots are a starting point, and the final decision on the locations of choice will depend on the outfits the subjects will be wearing when they arrive for the engagement session. The final decisions are usually in the same area to cut down on spending too much time moving from one location to the next and instead devote more time photographing the couple.
When Lyndal and Paul arrived, they had smart casual outfits on and had an outfit change part way into the shoot.
We warmed up for the shoot by the memorial building before moving onto the dunes. The dunes gave us the opportunity to shoot some landscape/seascape type of images, and I made use of the off camera flash in the process. The results were phenomenal.
The beach/water was the final stop. The reason for leaving the beach/water till the last being, if the dog or the couple got wet or dirty, then it wouldn’t matter at that would be the end of the shoot.
Finishing on the beach also gives Sasha a chance to run loose and let her play, and she did.
When you photograph couples that are truly in love, you can tell, and these guys are one of those couples. Their playfulness and comfort with each other made the job of photographing them ten times easier.
The weather played a big part too; it warmed up slightly allowing the couple to dress down and put their jackets aside.
The lighting kept changing so did the look and feel of the photos, which is a good thing, means at the end of the shoot there is more range to choose.
All in all, a great day at the office and Lyndal and Paul were happy too.

Photography Tip

When choosing a location for a beach photography session, plan how and when you are going to use the areas you intend to photograph.
Also, pay attention to the outfits your subjects bring for the shoot and match the outfits to the different locations.
Start dry and finish up by the water. That way, if clothes get wet, you are done with the shoot anyway. Also if your subject/s get wet and cold, then they can change into dry and warm clothes and warm up in the car.

Waimakariri River Autumn Engagement Photos: Kelly and Phil’s couples shoot.

When autumn arrives in Christchurch the weather pretty much feels like winter weather, and so was the case the day we shot Kelly and Phil’s engagement photos.

In the late autumn afternoon sun, we met up with Kelly and Phil under the Waimakariri Rail River bridge. The couple had opted for this particular location because of the location’s privacy and of their outdoorsy nature.

Phil loves the spot as he is a 4-wheel drive fanatic and frequents the area. He even works on his on 4×4 vehicles for repairs and improvements.

To kick start the shoot, we utilised a dirt road nearby and some beautiful warm light that was coming through the autumn coloured tree leaves. We shot on the dirt road for a short period making use of the different backgrounds that were at our disposal.

The shoot then moved to the river bed where we finished off and put Phil out of the misery of being in front of the camera.

It was a fun and enjoyable shoot and was short and sweet.

Photography Tip

Help your subjects to feel relaxed in front of the camera. The more they relax, the better the images the that will result from the shoot.

Christchurch Arts Centre Pre-wedding Photography: Hannah, Daniel and the girls on a rainy Christchurch winter day.

Another rainy day portraits shoot, and for this one opted to shoot under shelter because Hannah and Daniel wanted to include their two wee cute girls in the shoot.
Pip had managed to scout a spot next to The Gym. The area was sheltered from both the wind and the rain making it the ideal location to shoot with the little ones.
Daniel and Hannah brought along Daniels’s mum to the shoot to help out with the girls in between the photography session, and nana proved to be a big help.
Hannah dressed the girls in matching outfits and boy they looked adorable. As for her and Daniel, they went for a more casual look.
Because of the location and the and the abundance of natural light, I shot mostly using natural light. Shooting natural light also made it easier running around after the girls.
We kept the shoot short, so we didn’t have Hannah on her feet for too long as she is pregnant with the couple’s third child.
The couple is getting married early next year, and we can not wait to shot their wedding and also be our first wedding at the new wedding venue in Ohoka, called Lacebark. Read more about Lacebark.

Photography Tip

Do not get stuck in one way to light up your subjects. Choose the type of lighting that works best for the situation and creativity you are after in your images.

Misty Port Hills Engagement Photography: Nydia and Nick at the Sign of the Bell Bird on a day fog decided to visit the Port Hills of Christchurch.

Have you ever wished for something so bad that it was granted? I have wanted to do a portrait shoot in misty or foggy conditions, and the dream came to pass.
This happened when we had teed up an engagement session with Nydia and Nick with the shoot happening at the Sign of the Bell Bird up on the Port Hills.
On the day of the shoot, everywhere else the weather was cloudy with clear visibility as normal except up at the top of the Hills. Driving up the hills, I was excited as I had been longing for this type of weather condition to do a shoot in for ages. I had done landscape photography in misty conditions but never a portrait shoot.
By the time we got to the parking area, Nydia and Nick were already there and ready and after a quick scouting of the location were ready to go.
I was gutted that the hut at the Sign of the Bell Bird was fenced off as it is getting a new roof. That had been one of the spots I had intended on utilising.
However, there were some stone structures behind the hut, and we made use of those instead.
Nydia and Nick are an excellent couple with great personalities. They were easy going throughout the shoot, and despite the cold and misty weather they seemed to have enjoyed the shoot.
Alternating between off camera flash and natural light provided an interesting lesson and insight into photographing people in foggy conditions. It’s a whole different ballgame, and I must say I enjoyed it and am looking forward to a similar situation presents itself in future. I already have some tweaks in place for next time.

Photography Tip

When out on a location shoot and are using equipment for lighting up your subjects. Have an assistant who knows about the lighting system or equipment you will be using. That way if something goes wrong or the gear stops working, they can trouble shoot while you continue to photograph your subjects using other available means.

Winter Farm Engagement Photography: Natasha, Sam and Lacey.

Photographing people on a farm presents an excellent opportunity to incorporate farm animals in the shoot. This was the case with Natasha and Sam’s engagement shoot.
We met up with the couple at their farm in Loburn, and they brought along with them, their dog Lacey who is also a working dog on the farm.
The morning sun streaked across the paddocks bringing brightness to all in its path. On a farm, there were abundant choices of backgrounds and backdrops to choose from, and after chatting to the lovely Natasha and Sam, we locked in our location options.
To get warmed up, we started the shoot by the cattle/sheep pens before moving on to an old green, old shed. The next stop, the barn, was a short drive through the paddocks.
At the barn, the couple brought out a picnic rag of a full cow hide, which they sat on for some of the images. They even popped a bottle of bubbles to mark the occasion.
The couple confessed to having been nervous about the shoot days leading to it. They didn’t know what to expect.
Sam who had seemed to be camera shy at the beginning of the session was quick to warm up and get into the swing of things, thanks to Natasha who appears to be a natural in front of the camera.
After the barn, we headed to an area that’s overlooks into a valley and had the mountains as the backdrop. I would say this was probably Sam’s favourite spot as it summed up the beauty of living in such a magnificent piece of landscape.
Sam had hinted that he would love to get some photos taken of them and their cattle. So to cap off the Engagement Shoot, we wandered through a paddock to the cattle. Sam got Lacey to show off some of the moves she uses to show the animals who is the boss, which was quite impressive and I got a few action shots too.
Natasha and Sam are such an affectionate, loving and romantic couple, and we just let them be and fired the shots away.
They are also warm-hearted, they sent us home with a jar of locally produced manuka honey. YUM and great in chai tea.

Photography Tip

When in doubt of what type of lighting to use on your subjects. Backlight them.

Christchurch Autumn Engagement Photos: Serina and Pana couples shoot.

When you get to shoot portraits of any nature during the autumn season, it feels like there is no other better time for photographing outdoors.
Autumn has the magic of drawing people to the outdoors, as they wander and gaze at mother nature’s festival of colours.
Serina and Pana got the opportunity to get their engagement photos taken at this particular time.
With the couple working and spending most of their time out of Christchurch, it was a matter of timing it right and having the weather on our side to be able to have their engagement shoot outside.
Despite Serina and Pana being a shy and reserved couple. The shoot went exceptionally well, and the lighting was perfect.

Photography Tip

When shooting couples or portraits in a public place, try choosing a location that is quiet to give your subjects some privacy.
NOTE: With some locations, this may not be possible.

Bottle Lake Forest Engagement Photography

Bottle Lake Forest Engagement Photography: In and amongst the trees with Lucy and Jeremy.

Photographing people outside on a cloudy day is considered the time for people photography. I love it too, but at the same time, I miss the glow the sun can bring into images.

On the day of Lucy and Jeremy’s engagement shoot, the weather was cold and cloudy with a slight breeze. For those of you who have been to Bottlelake forest lately, you will know that the trees that have been sheltering the area from the nasty easterlies are slowly disappearing. Soon finding wind refuge in the trees is going to be a thing of the past.

Each time Pip and I have recently visited the forest we have disappointed to find some of our favourite spots cleared off trees. Enough of my sad tree disappearing story and back to the engagement shoot.

Because of the cold weather, we didn’t want to keep Lucy and Jeremy out in the open longer than necessary. So to be able to plan a quick shoot, we arrived early to give ourselves time to walk around and scout the area for spots we could potentially use for the engagement shoot. Just a bit of forward-planning on our part “pat on the back” hehehe.

When the couple arrived, we got straight to the business end of things. Lucy and Jeremy are a chilled couple who feel comfortable with each other, and we’re relaxed and laughing from the first click. Need I say more, the shoot was a fun one with heaps of crazy(that’s a good crazy) moments.

In less than an hour, we had worked with five different backdrops and each shot with different lighting. We shot most images with natural light and others with a combination of natural light and off camera flash.
Am loving the off camera flash photography, it’s been opening up a whole new bag of possibilities and creativity. We can’t wait for the wedding season to kick off so can apply this lighting to weddings. YAY!!!

I will stop the rambling. Enjoy the photos from the shoot.

Photography Tip

Check the location you intend to use for your photo shoot at least a few days before the shoot. Especially in the modern Christchurch, locations are ever changing. Walls, trees or buildings you may have envisioned using for a shoot may be gone by the time you get to the shoot date.
Have an option B in place as insurance.

Cathedral square engagement photos: Daniel and Katie couples shoot

On a sunny and partly cloudy Saturday morning, we met up with Daniel and Katie in the Cathedral Square to shoot their engagement photos.
They chose the Cathedral Square because that’s where were they first met and went on their first date.

The weather was not cold but cool enough to warrant putting a jacket on.

Daniel and Katie are a smiley, funny and playful couple who consider themselves to be big kids at heart, aren’t we all.

Dan is into Star Wars and gaming, while Katie is also into Burlesque and is a big fan of Disney. I must say Pip and I are Disney fans too.

The engagement shoot was Dan and Katie’s first shoot together so will be something for them to cherish.

Shooting Dan and Katie was fun and such a breeze as the couple are so comfortable with each other. I didn’t even have to make my dad jokes to get them to laugh and relax, they had that part covered.

We started the shoot by the bench where they first met and made our way around different spots in the Square.

Photography Tip

If you are planning to have a photo shoot in the Cathedral Square or any other public place that gets busy as the day goes on, best you schedule the shoot in the morning before it gets busy.
