8 Ways to make use of your wedding engagement photos

8 Ways to make use of your wedding engagement photos; You may be wondering,
now that we have our wedding engagement photos. What are we going to do with them?
Engagement photos can be too good to be left just to sit on the memory stick or hard drive of your computer.
Here are some ways in which you could put your wedding engagement photos to good use.
8 Ways to make use of your wedding engagement photos
1) Table settings and table numbers; There are some creative ways you could make use of your engagement photos as table decorations
and table numbers through printing and framing the images.

Besides the photos serving as table settings, they also give your guests something to look at.

2) Guest Books; can be printed, scraped or just a good-looking blank paged book that you can stick your engagement photos in and your guests get to sign and write their messages in between the pictures.

By using your engagement photos in your guest book, it further personalizes the book as well as improves the overall look.

3) Save the Date/ Invites; You do not always have to spend a fortune on creating invites for your wedding. Engagement photos can be a much more affordable way to make your save the date or wedding invites.

You could incorporate the images into design or print your wedding details on the back of the printed photos.

4) Postcard – Holiday cards; This is very similar to the last suggestion above with a change in the theme and design to suit.

5) Wedding Website; ideal for those wedding couples who love the idea of having all the wedding information on a wedding website for their guests to access.

Having your engagement photos on your website helps bring it to life as well as tell your story.

6) Family Gifts; Printing and framing some of your favorite engagement photos and passing them onto family members can be an excellent gift idea. The sizes don’t have to be big. You can limit the sizes to 5×6 or 7x5inches.

7) Personalised wedding favors; What better gifts to give your wedding guests. Your creativity and imagination are the limits. You may be able to get some ideas to get you started by using Uncle google or going to Pinterest.

8) Social Media; If you happen to be using social media to keep your friends and family posted about your wedding plans. You can use the engagement photos to accompany your social media posts.

5 Things the groom and groomsmen can do the morning of the wedding day

Things groom and groomsmen can do the morning of the wedding day; On the day of the wedding, the bride and bridesmaids
go through the wedding day rituals such as the hair styling, makeup and the whole shebang that goes with the day.
On the other hand, there is not a lot of preparation that the groom and his groomsmen do on the day of the wedding.
Fewer preparations mean the boys have heaps of time to kill before the wedding ceremony.
We have put together a list of activities the boys could engage in to keep themselves occupied.
5 Things the groom and groomsmen can do the morning of the wedding day
1) Golf; is one of the most popular activities for the boys to do on the morning of the wedding day.
The golf does not have to be the regular 18 hole game of golf but, can be a nine-hole game or even a fun variation of the game.
Say you use the same golf club for the duration of the game for all the strokes, which can be exciting and has the potential for some laughs and a good time.
2) Go out for breakfast or brunch; Is an excellent idea for those guys who would have been drinking the night before the wedding.
Nothing beats a great feed to cure a hangover and lay an excellent stomach foundation for the rest of the wedding day. Going out for a feed means no cleaning up after the meal.
3) BBQ; is another excellent way to kick-start the day and means by the time you get started on the beers, you have had a great feed to back you up.
4) Chill and listen to some tunes; Some guys will prefer to kick back and just relax while listening to some beats. Almost like the calm before the storm, some quiet time before the party.
This type of start to the day gives everybody a chance to iron the shirts, polish the shoes and make sure the speeches are in order and are not left until the 11th hour.
5) Beers and Cigars; If it’s your thing, then why not hang out with the boys and have a few beers and smoke some cigars.
There are a lot more activities the boys could do on the morning of the wedding, and if you have suggestions, please leave them in the comments section below.
If you know someone who may benefit from these ideas, do share the post with them.

Glaiza and Neil had booked with us through a wedding planner – so we hadn’t met each other yet.

But it didn’t take long before the ice melted, we all clicked pretty quickly, and they were the sweetest couple to work with.

The early evening light up on the Port Hills was just perfect.

We feel incredibly privileged to work in this fantastic wedding industry.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens Autumn Engagement Photography
: Leanne and Simon couples portraits.

Like I have mentioned before, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are one of the most versatile locations for portrait photography.

Pip and I met up with Leanne and Simon in the gardens for their engagement photography session. Leanne Simon are such a lovely and affectionate couple, Simon even has a tattoo of Leanne’s name on his forearm. How cute is that?

The couple came well prepared for the shoot, even bringing along a change of outfits. Changing outfit part way into the photo session gives a different look to the images.

By the time the shoot started, the sun was a bit low as it was late in the day, and coupled with the autumn colours produced lovely warm light which adds a romantic feel to the images.

We shot in 5 different locations, all of which were less than 100m from each other proving the versatility of this fantastic location.

Most of the lighting was backlighting the couple using the sun and using an off camera flash to light them from the front. This type of lighting is becoming the go to when shooting portraits.

The start of the shoot was a little shaky, but once the Leanne and Simon got relaxed, we were cooking with gas, and their natural selves came out to play.
The resulting images prove it all.

Photography Tip

If you are after photos with warm, glowing, romantic light. Shoot your subjects early in the morning while the sun is still low or late in the afternoon towards sunset.

New Brighton Beach Engagement Photography

New Brighton Beach Engagement Photography: Lyndal and Paul couples shoot, plus Sasha, the obedient dog.

There is no better place to photograph a couple and their dog than the beach.
Lyndal and Paul wanted to have their engagement photos shot at the beach so they could bring along their beloved dog Sasha and have her in the photos too.
They opted for the area around New Brighton Memorial because it’s not as busy as the other places along the beach.
As the norm, we arrived early to scout out the location for spots to use for the shoot. These spots are a starting point, and the final decision on the locations of choice will depend on the outfits the subjects will be wearing when they arrive for the engagement session. The final decisions are usually in the same area to cut down on spending too much time moving from one location to the next and instead devote more time photographing the couple.
When Lyndal and Paul arrived, they had smart casual outfits on and had an outfit change part way into the shoot.
We warmed up for the shoot by the memorial building before moving onto the dunes. The dunes gave us the opportunity to shoot some landscape/seascape type of images, and I made use of the off camera flash in the process. The results were phenomenal.
The beach/water was the final stop. The reason for leaving the beach/water till the last being, if the dog or the couple got wet or dirty, then it wouldn’t matter at that would be the end of the shoot.
Finishing on the beach also gives Sasha a chance to run loose and let her play, and she did.
When you photograph couples that are truly in love, you can tell, and these guys are one of those couples. Their playfulness and comfort with each other made the job of photographing them ten times easier.
The weather played a big part too; it warmed up slightly allowing the couple to dress down and put their jackets aside.
The lighting kept changing so did the look and feel of the photos, which is a good thing, means at the end of the shoot there is more range to choose.
All in all, a great day at the office and Lyndal and Paul were happy too.

Photography Tip

When choosing a location for a beach photography session, plan how and when you are going to use the areas you intend to photograph.
Also, pay attention to the outfits your subjects bring for the shoot and match the outfits to the different locations.
Start dry and finish up by the water. That way, if clothes get wet, you are done with the shoot anyway. Also if your subject/s get wet and cold, then they can change into dry and warm clothes and warm up in the car.

Waimakariri River Autumn Engagement Photos: Kelly and Phil’s couples shoot.

When autumn arrives in Christchurch the weather pretty much feels like winter weather, and so was the case the day we shot Kelly and Phil’s engagement photos.

In the late autumn afternoon sun, we met up with Kelly and Phil under the Waimakariri Rail River bridge. The couple had opted for this particular location because of the location’s privacy and of their outdoorsy nature.

Phil loves the spot as he is a 4-wheel drive fanatic and frequents the area. He even works on his on 4×4 vehicles for repairs and improvements.

To kick start the shoot, we utilised a dirt road nearby and some beautiful warm light that was coming through the autumn coloured tree leaves. We shot on the dirt road for a short period making use of the different backgrounds that were at our disposal.

The shoot then moved to the river bed where we finished off and put Phil out of the misery of being in front of the camera.

It was a fun and enjoyable shoot and was short and sweet.

Photography Tip

Help your subjects to feel relaxed in front of the camera. The more they relax, the better the images the that will result from the shoot.

Christchurch Arts Centre Pre-wedding Photography: Hannah, Daniel and the girls on a rainy Christchurch winter day.

Another rainy day portraits shoot, and for this one opted to shoot under shelter because Hannah and Daniel wanted to include their two wee cute girls in the shoot.
Pip had managed to scout a spot next to The Gym. The area was sheltered from both the wind and the rain making it the ideal location to shoot with the little ones.
Daniel and Hannah brought along Daniels’s mum to the shoot to help out with the girls in between the photography session, and nana proved to be a big help.
Hannah dressed the girls in matching outfits and boy they looked adorable. As for her and Daniel, they went for a more casual look.
Because of the location and the and the abundance of natural light, I shot mostly using natural light. Shooting natural light also made it easier running around after the girls.
We kept the shoot short, so we didn’t have Hannah on her feet for too long as she is pregnant with the couple’s third child.
The couple is getting married early next year, and we can not wait to shot their wedding and also be our first wedding at the new wedding venue in Ohoka, called Lacebark. Read more about Lacebark.

Photography Tip

Do not get stuck in one way to light up your subjects. Choose the type of lighting that works best for the situation and creativity you are after in your images.

Wedding dress shopping

Ladies, when you go out shopping for your wedding dress, I am sure you are searching for a wedding dress that is going to make you look your best. Besides from looking great, you want a dress that is comfortable as well as makes you feel hot and sexy. In short, something that will boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Embrace your greatest assets

On the other hand, I believe that every groom has something physical they love about their bride’s body and would want to see more of.

So while having the wedding party photos or during any part of the wedding day celebrations. Why not talk to your wedding photographer and sneak in some beautiful, tasteful and sassy photos to remind yourselves how sexy and adorable you look and felt on the day of your wedding.

Where to find fun sassy bridal photography inspiration

There is no harm in going to Pinterest and pinning some images you could share with your wedding photographer as examples of the type of sassy photos you would like to get taken on your wedding day.

Just remember that all wedding photos don’t have to be sassy looking unless that’s what you are after, but just a handful of images will be enough.

Brides, embrace your bodies and be proud and accentuate your greatest assets and dare to be different.

If you know someone who could benefit from this post, share it with them via the social media icons provided at the top of the page.

Misty Port Hills Engagement Photography: Nydia and Nick at the Sign of the Bell Bird on a day fog decided to visit the Port Hills of Christchurch.

Have you ever wished for something so bad that it was granted? I have wanted to do a portrait shoot in misty or foggy conditions, and the dream came to pass.
This happened when we had teed up an engagement session with Nydia and Nick with the shoot happening at the Sign of the Bell Bird up on the Port Hills.
On the day of the shoot, everywhere else the weather was cloudy with clear visibility as normal except up at the top of the Hills. Driving up the hills, I was excited as I had been longing for this type of weather condition to do a shoot in for ages. I had done landscape photography in misty conditions but never a portrait shoot.
By the time we got to the parking area, Nydia and Nick were already there and ready and after a quick scouting of the location were ready to go.
I was gutted that the hut at the Sign of the Bell Bird was fenced off as it is getting a new roof. That had been one of the spots I had intended on utilising.
However, there were some stone structures behind the hut, and we made use of those instead.
Nydia and Nick are an excellent couple with great personalities. They were easy going throughout the shoot, and despite the cold and misty weather they seemed to have enjoyed the shoot.
Alternating between off camera flash and natural light provided an interesting lesson and insight into photographing people in foggy conditions. It’s a whole different ballgame, and I must say I enjoyed it and am looking forward to a similar situation presents itself in future. I already have some tweaks in place for next time.

Photography Tip

When out on a location shoot and are using equipment for lighting up your subjects. Have an assistant who knows about the lighting system or equipment you will be using. That way if something goes wrong or the gear stops working, they can trouble shoot while you continue to photograph your subjects using other available means.

Waipuna Estate Wedding Photos | Anna and Jonny

Waipuna Estate Wedding Photos; Usually, I would start a blog with the girls getting ready, but this wasn’t the case with this wedding.

For us and especially for the Anna and Jonny the wedding started the day prior. We always make an effort to go to the wedding rehearsal so that we have an idea of what to expect on the day of the wedding.

So like usual, we went to the rehearsal at the original venue The Gondola. While there we were told there was a 90% chance that there was going to be high wind and that The Gondola would be closed, meaning the wedding wasn’t going to be able to be held there. The couple did know when they booked the Gondola, there was always a slim chance that the wedding may have to be moved to an alternative venue due to weather.

So this started the hunt for a new wedding venue with less than 24 hours until the wedding. Continental staff stepped up and came up with a few options for Anna and Jonny to look at and consider.

Waipuna Estate Wedding Photos | Anna & Jonny Video

Bride and bridesmaids pose for photos waipuna estate wedding Waipuna Estate wedding photos of Bride and groom on a hill in Tai Tapu

I think we all knew that when we stepped into Waipuna Estate at 4.30pm the day before the wedding that this was going to be the new wedding venue.

Sarah from Waipuna Estate had made it all sound so simple, and nothing was a problem, and the venue itself was stunning, so I think when we all walked out of there at 6 pm we knew we’d made a good choice, well Anna and Jonny had!
These two truly showed how strong a couple they are, watching them go through this with less than 24hours to go to their wedding and remain calm throughout the entire day was tremendously impressive to watch; I’m not sure if I were in their shoes I would’ve remained that calm.

Bride Getting Ready

After the dramas of the day before it was nice to show up to the girls early in the morning and see that everything was going so smoothly and running right on time.

The girls got ready at the Heritage Hotel when we arrived the hair was in full swing with the first bridesmaid about half way through. It was a pretty relaxing morning, chilling out watching hair be done, listening to some good tunes and having a few too many laughs.

The one joke that springs to mind is about Bras, and the girls we all extremely impressed that I was wearing one, I won myself a few extra points for just that. (sorry for the inside joke) The girls went off-site to Body and Soul to have their makeup done where Oz went with them. I was remarkably impressed by how quick they worked, for two bridesmaids and the bride they were only there for one hour, and the makeup stayed looking perfect all day long.
From there it was back to The Heritage Hotel to get dressed. This next bit was by far one of my favorite parts of the day. We had been warned from day one of meeting Anna and Jonny that her Dad was a cryer and wanted to be a part of the photos. So we made sure this was going to happen.

I led Paul (the bride’s dad) in with his eyes closed to the room for him to be able to see Anna for the first time dressed as a Bride. That first instance when he was allowed to open his eyes you could see how proud he was to be her Dad and how much he adored her. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room (it’s even bringing tears to my eyes writing about it now too) Once we all gathered ourselves we headed for the beautiful staircase inside the hotel for some more photos then off to the venue we went.

Groom Getting Ready

Jonny had had a pretty relaxed morning. He spent the morning with his boys just relaxing at Rogers place and waiting for me to turn up for photos.

I’d said the night before not to be dressed when I turned up (I really have to watch my wording sometimes!) this turned into another joke of the day, so when I walked into the place the first thing Jonny said to me was, you’ll see we didn’t get dressed but weren’t naked!

The boys were pretty cruisy getting ready, they had pocket squares to fold, and the cute thing was the company they got the pocket squares from also sent a wee fold out instruction panel of how to fold them, this was quite entertaining. With the boys dressed and photographed I left them to get to Waipuna Estate, and I headed back to the girls.

The Ceremony

It was a bit further to the new venue, but because they had already had to allow time in their schedule for them to get up the gondola, so this extra time was now used to get to the new venue, and it worked out perfectly. When we all arrived at Waipuna Estate, it was drizzly outside, so we shuffled the girls inside out of view of the guests.

The ceremony was held on the deck, outside but under shelter so everyone was protected from the elements. The ceremony itself was short and sweet, just what Anna and Jonny wanted and the Celebrant Julie Lassen made sure that was the case. The bride and groom had put a lot of thought into choosing a date for the wedding, the 1st of September was not only the date of their first date but also the date they got engaged and now their wedding date! Makes remembering a wee bit easier, but it also makes it pretty darn special.

Bridal Party Photos

With the weather being quite miserable outside we tried our best to keep most of the photos inside the house (of which there were some beautiful spots we were able to use). We spent most of our time in the master suite, with a couple of trips outside into the cold.

Anna and Jonny had told us they were pretty brave and up for anything when it came to the photos. We had found a spot with some rocks at the top of the hill which is less than 1km up the road from the wedding venue. So we all loaded into the cars (it was only light drizzle at the venue) and took a ride up the hill.

When we got out of the cars to walk up the hill, it wasn’t too bad, but once we got to the top of the hill (only about a minute walk), it was completely a different story. The wind was howling, and the rain was coming down good!  Mother nature claimed two of our umbrellas which are now right offs.

We made it as quick as we could at the top, there wasn’t that much we could do up there with that weather, so we trekked back down and used the gravel road for some shots as well, before taking them back to the house to warm back up!

The Reception

Sarah and her team at Waipuna Estate had done an incredible job with the venue. When we turned up at 4.30pm the day before, then entire reception area was set up like a house, with a large dining room table with chairs and a massive lounge suite, and less than 24 hours later it was set up as a stunning wedding reception room with no lounge suite in site!

I know I say it about most weddings, that by the end of the night we feel like family, but this one felt different, and I think some of that came from spending the day before the wedding with the couple as well. Because of this (and the build up Anna had given us), I was looking forward to speeches, especially Pauls. And it delivered beyond belief! The funny stories and the emotional ones. Just like the morning, it was so easy to see how proud he was and how much he loves his little Anna!

Anna and Jonny had a choreographed dance; they were pretty nervous about this, I’m not sure why as they absolutely smashed it! The entire family was hanging out for this part as they were chomping at the bit to get on the dance floor, which is not surprising, as Brendan from Boogie Beats was playing killer music all night. All the classics that make everyone want to dance!
